FC Red Bull Salzburg succumbed to a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Inter Milan in their UEFA Champions League group stage match on Tuesday. Despite a strong start to the game, the Austrian champions were unable to find a breakthrough and were eventually undone by a second-half penalty from Lautaro Martinez. The result leaves Salzburg bottom of Group C with just one point from their opening three matches.
Salzburg made a bright start to the game and came close to taking an early lead through Noah Okafor. However, the Swiss forward was unable to direct his header on target after being found by a cross from Nicolas Seiwald.
Inter gradually grew into the game and began to create chances of their own. Romelu Lukaku had a great opportunity to open the scoring in the 25th minute, but he fired wide of the target after being played through by Nicolo Barella.
The visitors continued to press for an opener in the second half and were eventually rewarded in the 68th minute. Salzburg defender Bernardo failed to clear a cross from the right flank, and the ball fell to Martinez, who made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Salzburg pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but they were unable to break down a resolute Inter defense. The result leaves them with an uphill battle to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition.
